Beautiful People #1

I have elected to start another blogging meme…Beautiful People, hosting by Paper Fury and Further Up and Further In. You can find more information on it here.

It’s a blogging meme that goes live the 5th of every month, and it’s designed to help writers know their characters better. This month is focusing on the main character and whatever siblings they may have. I am doing Olive Weatherby (16), from a novel I have outlined yet not started. Her brothers are Garret (18), Griffin (14), and Archer (10)

1. What is the first memory they have of each other?

Of Garret, Olive’s first memory is of him convincing her that the little block of brown soap is fudge, and the day they were born for both Griffin and Archer.

2. Describe their relationship in 3 words.

Pretty standard, actually.

3. What kind of things do they like to do together?

With Garret, things tend to involve either computers, the X-box, or food. Sometimes all three. With Archer things tend to involve some sort of sport, normally either football or baseball. Or anything he can whack really hard with a bat. Griffin views it at dorky and uncool to do stuff with his older sister, so they tend not to do stuff together.

4. What was their biggest fight?

Olive can’t remember really having a big fight with Garret…he’s pretty laid-back and really hard to get angry. If there was a time, it would be when she hit a baseball and it dented his car. With Griffin it would be when he refused to go into the same movie as her…he wanted her to pay for his ticket to see another movie “in case my friends see me with my nerdy big sister”. With Archer it would be when he messed around on her laptop and deleted some files.

5. How far would they go to save each other?

Pretty far. They wouldn’t dive into lava or anything to save each other, but they would knock each other out of the way of a car at risk to themselves, or injure themselves to save one another.

6. What are their pet peeves about each other?

Garret hogs the t.v., Olive’s a neat-freak, Griffin chews his food and slurps his drinks really loudly, and Archer never picks up his stuff.

7. What are their favorite things about each other?

Garret can fix anything, Olive will cheerfully run an errand, Griffin somehow manages to adore animals and get’s upset if they’re hurt/dead, and Archer is always up to do something…anything.

8. What traits do they share? Mannerisms, clothing, quirks, looks, etc?

Garret and Griffin close enough to be twins…same dark hair and dark eyes, from their Mom, while Olive and Archer share the golden-brown hair and green eyes from their dad. They all make the same little gestures when they’re talking…waving heads, tilting heads, chewing lips, ect.

9. Who has the strongest personality?

Archer or Griffin.

10. How does their relationship change throughout your story?

Archer and Olive get closer, and Griffin becomes more open to hanging out with his sister. Garret moves out, truly becoming a “grown up”, and he becomes more distant with his siblings, and they become a bit more distant with him.

So those are my siblings. I love ’em. Even though I haven’t officially started writing yet, I find it fun coming up with all these story lines for siblings, which I haven’t really done before. It adds an interesting depth to the story, and since it’s Olive and three brothers…shanagins happen.

Happy Monday,

  1. I love all of your characters’ names! They seem to have a pretty standard, slightly combative, slightly antagonistic sibling relationship — nice and realistic.

“Of Garret, Olive’s first memory is of him convincing her that the little block of brown soap is fudge”

    AHH! That’s just mean!

  2. I love coming up for story lines for siblings too. ^_^ YAY I LIKED READING THIS. Your answer to #2 made me giggle a bit.
    Thanks for joining in!

  3. This reminded me of my own siblings 🙂 Olive and myself seem to have a lot in common. The soap thing made me laugh definitely something my brothers would do.

  4. I know you haven’t really started this yet, but it sounds like something I’d like to read. (just based off the descriptions of the siblings) I love their names and personalities… great job! 🙂
