Blurbs, Zombies, and Camp NaNoWriMo (again)

Camp-Participant-2015-Web-BannerYep. I’m doing it again in July, for no other reason than I need a kick in the butt to get my next novel going before regular NaNo starts up. I switched out the Murder Mystery for the zombie novel, mostly because I feel like a mystery needs to be really fleshed out before I start writing it and it’s nowhere near fleshed out right now.

My novel is called “Rabid”. Here’s the (slightly WIP) blurb.

When Cass’s dog started acting weird, she thought nothing of it. It was the summer heat; Winston was a sheepdog, after all. But then, he tears apart the neighbor’s cat, attempts to attack a boy walking to school, and will growl at anyone who attempts to come near him, even Cass.
When he strangles himself on the end of his chain, Cass thinks it’s the end of it. But Winston doesn’t stay dead for long.
All the animals across the globe are being affected by this new sickness, which scientists are liking to rabies, except humans can’t catch it. The animals of the world are going crazy, and people are dying.
People always assumed that when the zombies came, they would be human. Somehow, them being animals are much, much worse.

When I first explained the novel to my younger cousin, she started laughing hysterically. When I asked why, she said “zombie cow” and started laughing again. Is this some sort of inside joke from a movie or something? Because I really don’t get it.

Meanwhile, I’m trying to figure out all the science-y stuff behind the zombie-fying. I think I’ll call the scientific name for the “sickness” The Efferus Virus, which, translated, means “The The Crazed Virus”. No, that wasn’t a typo. If someone ever thought to translate it, it would have two “the”s. But I can’t think of anything better, so…help.

Meanwhile, I’m trying to figure out if I should order a cover off someone on the NaNoWriMo Forums, make it myself (and have it turn out horrible), or try to convince a tech-savvy friend into designing one for me. I don’t want to have to pay for one, which makes my options rather limited.

If anyone wants to add me as a buddy or something on the NaNo website, my screen name is VintageTypewriter.

Happy Wednesday,

BlogSiggie

  1. Your story sounds very cute. I love the idea of zombie animals. It reminds me of the dream I had once about vegetarian zombies destroying the world’s plants and forests. Maybe I’ll write it someday. I think your sister was laughing at zombie cow because. . . zombie cow. How can you NOT laugh at that?

Are you planning to do the standard 50K or is your word goal different? I haven’t figured out my target word count yet, but I kind of want to aim high to get a first draft of this story completed.

Also, just saying, I make book covers, if you want one. And yes they’re free :3 My username is Malefiseok, if you want to be cabin buddies.

    1. My word goal is 15k ’cause our July’s tend to be busy. But I’ll keep working on it, and maybe I’ll keep working on it for regular NaNo if I haven’t finished it before then. But I swore to myself that this would be the novel I finished and revised, and that I would try to get published. So, we’ll see.

  2. I am doing NaNo in July as well, finished my first novel in April. I wrote Science Fiction for the first, but I am switching up for Dark Fantasy with a 10k word count. Going the short story route this time around.

Also, Zombie Cow is pretty funny. I like the premise, I would read it.
