Top Ten Bookish Habits I Need to Quit

5f295-toptentuesday

So, this week at Top Ten Tuesday is Top Ten Bookish Things You Want to Quit: I was originally going to do books I DNFed, but I hardly ever (like twice a year) start a book and not finish it. So, I’m just changing it to various bookish habits I want to quit.

I NEED TO QUIT REARRANGING MY BOOKSHELF

Since January, my bookshelf has been sorted by series, alphabetically, by color, and now, by height. I think I’ll try and keep it like this for a while, because I’ve rearranging it so much that I still sometimes go and look for a book in it’s old place, instead of it’s new one.

I NEED TO QUIT NOT DNFING BOOKS

Because it will take me a WEEK to finish a book that bores me out of my mind because I won’t let myself put it down. I keep telling myself that “oh, it might get better toward the end!”. Most of time it doesn’t. AND THERE ARE REALLY GREAT BOOKS I COULD BE READING INSTEAD.

I NEED TO QUIT GIVING PEOPLE WHO DON’T WANT THEM BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS

“Hey, you should read (insert really awesome book here!”

“Thanks, Aine, I’ll add it to the list THAT’S OVER A HUNDRED BOOKS LONG.”

Seriously. Most of my friends have a list somewhere of all the book recommendations that I give them and since I’m not really friends which bookworms who read every day, it builds up fast. Sometimes, if I’m feeling slightly passive aggressive, I’ll buy one of the books that’s been on their list for a really long time and give it to them as a Christmas/birthday gift.

And sometimes they still don’t read it.

I NEED TO QUIT GETTING MORE LIBRARY BOOKS THAT I CAN REASONABLY READ IN TWO WEEKS

Because they all sound SO. AWESOME, and because I must READ ALL THE THINGS, my library book piles tend to be insane. Seriously, I will get raised eyebrows from the LIBRARIANS sometimes. So I need to start limiting myself to a more reasonable amount. We tend to go to the library at least once every two weeks…so instead of twenty five books, I should check out twenty four. That seems reasonable, right?

I NEED TO QUIT BUYING BOOKS WHEN I REALLY SHOULD BE SAVING MY MONEY

I’m a broke high schooler. And the REASON I’m a broke high schooler is because whenever I get the tiniest amount of money I use it on books. Especially since the holidays are coming up, I need to starts saving.

My family is rather unfair in the fact that their birthdays and Christmas are all kind of crumbled up into a span of six or eight weeks.

I NEED TO QUIT COMPARING MYSELF TO OTHER BLOGGERS

Especially those bloggers who have been blogging for years and I’ve been doing it for ten months. THEY WILL JUST BE BETTER. But that doesn’t mean that I can’t someday be on their level, after I’ve been blogging for five or six or seven years.

I NEED TO QUIT BUYING KINDLE ADDITIONS OF BOOKS THAT I WANT IN PHYSICAL FORM

I do this because it’s highly likely that I’ll get to read the book before it comes out. As much as I love my Kindle, I do prefer paper-and-ink books. And it’s kind of on the fritz anyways, so if it suddenly breaks or something I don’t want to have to wait until I can get a new one if I want to reread a favorite book.

I NEED TO QUIT PUTTING OFF A REVIEW FOR WEEKS OR MONTHS

It’s super easy for me to review a book that’s just kind of okay or if I dislike it. It’s way harder for me to write a review for a book that I LOVE. Because I want the review to show how much I ADORE this book! I still need to write a review for the Accident Season, but I keep putting it off because I loved it so much.

I NEED TO QUIT HANGING ON TO BOOKS I REALLY WON’T READ AGAIN

But WHAT if I want to READ IT again for whatever reason? But what if a friend wants to burrow it or I need it for something and I just CAN’T get rid of it.

I need to stop saying this. There are books that are taking up space on an already overflowing bookshelf (shelves), and it would really be better if I got rid of them. I’m not going to read them again.

I NEED TO QUIT BUYING BOOKS WHEN MY LIBRARY PILE IS OVERFLOWING

Because if I buy a book I’ve either already read it and LOVED IT, or I’ve read a sample or something online or read the first two or so chapters and LOVED IT, so I know I will LOVE IT, and so I read it because the towering pile of library books. That expire. I need to start putting library books before books I actually buy.

So! What are some bookish habits you absolutely HAVE to quit? Or at least, really, really want to quit?

Happy Tuesday,

BlogSiggie

  1. Agree with so many of your ‘things’ although I haven’t rearranged my bookshelves in the probably 15 years I’ve had them so might have to get round to that!

I am so bad for comparing myself to other bloggers, and after two years I’m finally feeling comfortable with my blog! You’ll get there lovely, your blog is awesome already xx

  2. Hello Aine,
Congratulations on 10 months as a blogger while in High school which means you started in January!!
On books, one suggestion is my motto, buy used”. There’s someone out there that donated their new book. In my area of the Northeast in Central Jersey, there are frequent occurrences of book sales at many area libraries, the ones I especially like are the huge fundraisers at the private schools or at the Theological Seminary book sale. ( who knew?).
I am curious to the title of your blog, and what type of typewriter you have?
I have both an electric typewriter with it’s case and one non- electric, the kind with the black/ red ink ribbons that can be rewound and reused.
My blog has many themes, one being my mom’s history of growing up in a coal mining village.
Have you ever had a conversation with your grandparents or great grandparents on their youth?

    1. I started December 1st, actually. But thanks. I mostly buy used books; we’ve got a couple of cool little shops where you can get a few paperbacks for less than $10. I have a powder blue Brother Charger 11. I forget what year it is at the moment. And I have.
