In Which I Pickpocket the How I Read Book Tag

0001-152105497.png

I have decided to continue my long running habit of stealing book tags instead of actually being tagged for them. In this case, I stole it from Kat @ Life and Other Disasters. Thanks, Kat, despite you not tagging me and me not telling you that I stole it.

Yep.

Anyways, this tag was too good to pass up, and so here I go.

HOW DO YOU FIND NEW BOOKS TO READ?

Other blogs, mostly. I read this insane amount of blogs, even if I only comment on one or two (it’s a habit I need to break), and basically any book someone rates three stars or above will be added to my TBR list. And, of course, there’s Goodreads, and also the random books I pick up at the library because I like the title/cover.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO READING?

I’ve always loved reading! Basically, as soon as I got the most basic knowledge of how to read, I was reading everything I could get my hands on. You know those books that kids start learning to read with? “See Spot, See Spot Run?” I basically skipped those because I was so desperate to read the books like Magic Tree House and Junie B. Jones.

HOW HAS YOUR TASTE IN BOOKS CHANGED AS YOU’VE GOTTEN OLDER?

  • I used to be perfectly happy reading a book with a great plot and flat characters, or the other way around. Not anymore. Now it at least has to have an okay plot AND okay characters.
  • I’m not as picky about what I read. I used to read only sci-fi, fantasy, and mystery. Not anymore. While I’m not as prone to liking them, I will read contemporary novels.
  • I’m way more open to trying new authors. I used to only read books from authors I already liked, and it would be a struggle to get me to try someone new. Now I’m not like that.
  • I’m way more likely to pick up a book if I like the cover. I’M A TOTAL COVER SNOB. I almost didn’t read The Scorpio Races (which you know I adore) because I didn’t like the original cover.

HOW OFTEN DO YOU BUY BOOKS?

Maybe once a week? I live around a  lot of used book stores which I’m know to hang out at. But I eventually had to make a rule that I could only buy two books a one time because I would be walking out of the bookstore with five or six books (which, y’know, are only like a dollar apiece, so it’s easy to do), but my bookshelves can’t fit anything else in and now my books are in piles around my bedroom. I might have to change the rule to one book at a time.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO BOOK REVIEWING?

My friends have taken to tuning me out whenever I talk about books because I’m the main reason why their TBR lists are so big, and since I’m not friends with any bookworms and they read like one book a month (//gasp!), they don’t need a 100+ book TBR pile.So reviewing books was my way of saying, “HEY, WORLD I LOVED THIS BOOK YOU SHOULD READ IT AND LOVE IT TOO” if my friends were ignoring my recommendation. It still kinda is.

HOW DO YOU REACT IF YOU DON’T LIKE THE ENDING OF THE BOOK?

I will shriek and basically turn into a ball of rage. If it’s part of a series and there will be another book, the rage might dim somewhat. If it’s a standalone or a series finale, the book will be cursed and I will consider burning it. Instead, I’ll give it a bad review.

HOW OFTEN DO YOU TAKE A SNEAK PEEK AT THE ENDING TO SEE IF THERE’S A HAPPY ENDING?

If I’m really liking the book…NEVER. But if the book is boring me a bit, I’ll go and read the last chapter to see if the book gets better to convince me to continue and not DNF the book at 100 pages. Also, I read the last chapter of The Deathly Hallows. I was twelve and terrified that Hermione was going to die. Please don’t judge me.

  1. I am a total cover snob too! But deep down, I think I’ve always been that way. Aesthetics are important!
And you can “steal” as many tags as you want from me hahaha I mostly write YOU in big, bold letters in the end, because it’s so difficult to tag everyone who will probably want to do it.

    1. I know. Gosh, it’s an awful habit. But before I set the rule I would walk into a bookstore and come out with an armful of books and a significantly lighter purse. It would be worse if I lived on Capitol Hill or in the U-District and was walking distance from my favorite bookstores.
