Beautiful People #20

beautifulpeople

I am once again linking up with Beautiful People, a writing link up hosted by Cait @ Paper Fury and Sky @ Further Up and Further In.

Anyways, this time I’m going to be talking about my secret project. I’ve kept it quiet for a while, because, as you know, I have a tendency for getting super excited about a novel and telling everyone about it and then getting like 10k into it and realizing that hey, maybe it wasn’t that great an idea anyways.

But this one I’ve been plotting since around June, and in involves some of my favorite things. Dragons, food, the ocean, and a fantasy world based somewhere other than the US (in this case…China).

So meet Rou, daughter of two fishermen, resident of Xiamo, the largest (and only) seaside city in the not yet named country. (I’m horrible at coming up with place names)

Give a brief overview of their looks. (Include a photo if you want!)

She’s muscular, with shoulder length straight black hair and dark gray eyes.

Share a snippet that involves description of their appearance.

“While I share my hair and eye color with my brother, I share most of my other physical features with my sister. While my brother is angles, all shoulders and knees and elbows, Lei and I are curves, thanks to years of working side by side with our parents.”

What is the first thing people might notice about them?

Rou always looks like she has a tiny smile. Both her and her brother do.

What are their unique features? (Ex: freckles, big ears, birthmark, scars, etc.)

Rou’s hands and arms are scarred from years of fishing, and therefor years of fishhooks. She has a birthmark on her lower back, and another scar on her chin from when she fell from the boat and hit her chin on the dock.

How tall are they? What is their build (Ex: stocky, slender, petite, etc.)

She’s about 5’1″. She’s solidly build and muscular. Curvy might be the right way to describe her.

What is their posture like? How do they usually carry themselves?

Her posture is fine. Not great, not horrible. She tends to be always looking down at something, whatever is in her hands at the time. Normally one of her notebooks or some sort of food. She’s constantly hungry.

Your character has been seen on a “lazy day” (free from usual routine/expectations): what are they wearing and how do they look?

Pretty much the exact same way she does when she’s working, except not barefoot. Loose linen pants and cotton shirt, with some sort of bag slung over her shoulder. She would be wearing her glasses, which are thin and wire-rimmed.

Do they wear glasses, accessories, or jewelry on a regular basis? Do they have any article of clothing or accessory that could be considered their trademark?

She has glasses, but she doesn’t wear them when she’s out on the water so she doesn’t loose them. She has a dark blue military style coat which she adores, and wears it every chance she gets.

Have they ever been bullied or shamed because of their looks? Explain!

She hasn’t, really. She looks like a good three quarters of Xiamo, and if she was teased in school, it was for reasons other than her appearance.

Are they happy with how they look? If they could change anything about their appearance, what would it be?

She sometimes wishes she was blonde-haired and golden-eyed like her sister, or a bit taller, but other than that, she pretty happy with how she looks. She’s never had any reason to think she should be anything but happy with how she looks.

Happy Saturday,

  1. Aww, she sounds sweet – the kind of character I want to meet and hug and be best friends with. 🙂 I like the names and cultural stuff. How is her sister blond and blue-eyed when these people are Asian???

    1. That’s the hope!
It’s all weird genetic stuff. Kind of like how two people with dark skin can have a light skinned kid. I made sure it’s something that’s actually possible, and as long as there’s just enough of whatever gene, there’s like a 2% chance that it’ll happen.
But I thought it would be funny to give what’s normally a special snowflake type thing to an older sibling instead of the younger narrator.

  2. Ohhhh THREE HUZZAHS for fantasy worlds with dragons that are set in different countries!! *shrieks with joy* this sounds wonderful. And I looooove the descriptions. I feel like I could really picture Rou (which is a fabulous name I might add) after this!!
    Thanks for joining in!!
